String Bet

  1. Noun

A wager made using more than one statement about the wager or using multiple motions to put chips into the pot.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Many cardrooms forbid string bets. One reason for this is that opponents' reactions to the first portion of the wager may impact a player's decision on whether to increase it. Cardrooms typically require that all chips for a wager be put into the pot at the same time or that the total amount of chips be declared before putting any into the pot.

EXAMPLE: Player A says, "I call your $100 and reraise you $200." The dealer responds, "That was a call. Verbal bets are binding and string bets are not permitted."

    APPLIES TO: Land-based Venues
