Stake Player

  1. Noun

    A house player who does not have any personal money at risk and is paid based on winnings; a cardroom employee bankrolled by the house and paid a percentage of one's winnings.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A stake player is distinct from a shill because shills are paid a predetermined amount rather than an amount determined by winnings.

    EXAMPLE: "I usually play $10-$20 games, but I have gone to the $15-$30 tables when playing as a stake player. The competition is tougher and it is good practice, but my own bankroll is slightly smaller than I'd want it to be before I played at that level using my own money."
