Dead Money

  1. Noun

The entry fee for a tournament player who is unskilled or is expected to lose.

EXAMPLE: "With record-breaking numbers of players in the major tournaments, you just know there has got to be a lot of dead money. A lot of the weaker players who get lucky in a satellite really have no chance of placing in the money."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues

  2. Noun

Money wagered by a player who has little or no chance of winning, either because that player has already folded or because that player has a weak hand; a donation.

EXAMPLE: "I had pocket queens and raised before the flop. There were 6 callers and the flop came up Kc-Ac-Kd. One of my opponents raised and another reraised, so I decided to fold rather than make the cold call. I figured at least one of the six players had a king or an ace, and there is no point chasing dead money with more dead money."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues

  3. Noun

A player who is unskilled or is otherwise expected to lose money.

EXAMPLE: "I play reasonably well in low limit Texas Hold'em games, but I'm just dead money when I play 7-card stud."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues

  4. Noun

Chips or cash that a player is required to contribute to the pot but that do not count toward that player's contribution.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: When a player has missed both the big blind and small blind, the player is typically required to contribute both blinds when they join the game again. When this occurs, the big blind typically counts toward the player's contribution to the pot, but the additional small blind contribution does not count toward the total. Example: If a player posts dead with a big blind of $6 and a small blind of $3, the $3 small blind would be dead money. If it were not dead money, the player would only have to put an additional $7 in the pot if an opponent raised $10.

EXAMPLE: "I decided to wait for the big blind again rather than be dealt in immediately. If I were dealt in immediately, I would've been required to post some dead money."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues

    GAME CATEGORY: Shared Card Games
