Dealer

  1. Noun

The person responsible for distributing cards.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The dealer is not necessarily the person in the dealer's position. In casinos and cardrooms, the dealer is an employee who does not play in the game and will therefore never be in the dealer's position. For home games, it is traditional for the dealer to be the player in the dealer position, but this is not a fixed rule and can vary if a certain person particularly enjoys or dislikes dealing or for other reasons such as game speed.

EXAMPLE: "One of the players at my home game last week couldn't handle the cards well because of a hand injury. So, I agreed to be the dealer when my friend was on the button."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues

  2. Noun

EXAMPLE: "I posted the small blind last hand, so I'm the dealer now."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues
