Noun
A mandatory bet made before any cards are dealt, either in addition to or instead of an ante. Most common in community card games. Different than an ante in that: (a) it counts toward the total amount a player has contributed to the pot in a given hand, and; (b) it is only required of certain players.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The players required to contribute are usually two rotating blinds, a big blind two seats to the left of the dealer and a small blind immediately to the left of the dealer. There exist variations on the number of blinds and determination of who will be the blind, such as adding a little blind to create three blinds or assigning the blind to a player who has won multiple consecutive hands, although two rotating blinds are most common. When a big blind (BB) and small blind (SB) are required, the amounts are typically denoted $SB/$BB, such as 30/60.
EXAMPLE: "Since I'd already put in the blind and nobody raised, I got to see the flop even though I'd have folded my rags if I'd seen them before having to place a bet."
