Burn

  1. Verb

    To discard the top card from the deck prior to dealing the cards for a particular round.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Burning is done to prevent cheating by having the dealer intentionally flash the top card to a particular player and to prevent abuse when a dealer accidently flashes the top card. It also minimizes potential cheating by using marked cards.

    EXAMPLE: "You will almost always see the dealer burn cards for each round in a poker room, but a lot of players don't burn any cards when playing social games at home."
