Backraise

  1. Verb

To call a bet made by a player in earlier position and then reraise if a player in later position raises.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A backraise is similar to a check-raise. In both cases, the player makes the minimum contribution to the pot on the first action -- checking when there is no bet ahead of the player and calling when there is a bet ahead of the player -- and increasing the required wager as the second action.

EXAMPLE: "I had an ok hand, but it wasn't strong enough to call two more bets when a player after me raised and the player to my right backraised."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues

RELATED TERMS: Bet, Check-Raise, Raise, Reraise
