California Lowball

  1. Noun

Ace-to-Five lowball with a Joker added to the deck as a wild card; any variation of poker in which players attempt to make the weakest poker hand possible, with Aces considered low cards, with straights and flushes being ignored, and with a Joker added as a wild card.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This term is sometimes mistakenly used to refer to Ace-to-Five lowball without a Joker. The best possible hand in California Lowball is 5-4-3-2-A regardless of suit, as opposed to the best possible hands 7-5-4-3-2 without a flush in Deuce-to-Seven Lowball and 6-4-3-2-A without a flush in Ace-to-Six Lowball.

EXAMPLE: "I prefer standard Ace-to-Five lowball more than California Lowball. I haven't really learned enough about how the wild card impacts the game to play California lowball very well."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues

RELATED TERMS: Ace-to-Five Lowball, Ace-to-Six Lowball, Joker, Kansas City Lowball, London Lowball, Lowball
