Chip Leader

  1. Noun

In a tournament, the player who has the greatest number of chips.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: While the phrase is sometimes used to refer to the player with the greatest number of chips in a ring game, this usage is misleading. Because players can buy-in for varying amounts and may have been at the table for differing lengths of time, the total number of chips a player has in a ring game may not be an indicator of their playing abilities.

EXAMPLE: "I was the chip leader early in the tournament, but had a few bad hands that really hurt my stack. Even with those few bad hands, I still ended up placing in the money thanks to my early lead."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues

    ANTONYMS: Short Stack

RELATED TERMS: In the Money, Leader Board, Out of the Money, Ring Game, Tournament
