Chop

  1. Verb

    To distribute portions of the pot to multiple winners; split the pot.

    EXAMPLE: "We've tied for the pot, chop it."

  2. Noun

    A portion of a split pot.

    EXAMPLE: "We tied with a $40 pot. My chop was $20."

  3. Verb

    In a game with multiple blinds, to return the blinds to the players who posted them and play a new hand rather than continuing the one in progress, done upon the agreement of the blinds when no other players have called or raised; split the blinds.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Chopping is disallowed in many cardrooms.

    EXAMPLE: "I don't usually chop. I enjoy playing heads up against the other blind."

  4. Verb

    Make change for a chip or multiple chips, especially when a portion of the change will be used for a toke.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: It is often assumed that chopping entails tipping the dealer half the amount involved given a chip that can be divided evenly.

    EXAMPLE: Handing the dealer a $10 chip with the intent to toke the dealer $5 and receive $5 in return, a player might say "Dealer, could you chop this?"

  5. Verb

    To take a percentage of the pot as compensation of hosting a game; rake.

    EXAMPLE: "The house chops a lot out of the pot."

    The rake; money taken for hosting the game.

    EXAMPLE: "The chop was 5%."

  7. Verb

    To leave a table after only a brief period of play, especially when the player doing so leaves the table with more money or chips than they joined it with; hit and run.

    EXAMPLE: "I like to chop when I play in online cardrooms because if I stay in the same room for too long other players start to pick up on patterns in my play. I also find it helps me manage my bankroll because I play a little carelessly right after I've won a big pot."
