High - [Card Value] High

Alternate Term: [Card Value]-High

High - [Card Value] High
  1. Noun

A hand ranking below one pair in which the card of greatest value is specified and in which that card determined the strength of the hand.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Example: The hand Ah-Jd-10d-7s-5c is an Ace-high. This hand would defeat the Queen-high hand Qc-Jc-10c-8s-5d and would be defeated by any hand with at least a pair or another Ace-high hand with a higher kicker.

    SAMPLE HAND:

EXAMPLE: "I made a stone cold bluff with nothing but Ace-high, and an opponent called. I nearly fell out of my chair when it turned out my opponent had an Ace-high with a weaker kicker. That's the kind of call people make in low-limit games. I still can't believe it."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues

RELATED TERMS: Hand, High Card, Kicker, Kicker Trouble, Pair

[Card Value]-High
  1. Adjective

In which the specified card value is the greatest rank of any cards in the hand.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: If multiple players have a straight, flush, or straight flush, the winner is determined by the value of the highest card in the hand. If both players have the same card value as the highest card, players compare the second-highest card, third-highest card, etc. until one hand is determine to outrank the other. Example: The hand 8c-7h-6d-5s-4s is an 8-high straight. This would be defeated by and hand ranking above a straight or by a higher straight. For instance, the 10-high straight 10s-9h-8c-7h-6d, which shares the 8c-7h-6d as community cards, would defeat the 8-high straight. The flush Ah-Qh-7h-3h-2h would be an Ace-high flush and would win against the King-high flush Ks-Js-9s-5s-4s.

EXAMPLE: "We were playing pot-limit Omaha. I had a Jack-high flush but folded when an opponent bet the pot. I figured my opponent made a higher flush, and the bet was just too big to call."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues

USAGE: Describes a straight, flush, or straight flush.
