House Cut

  1. Noun

Rake; the percentage amount or total dollar amount of money taken from the pot by the house.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The fees charged by the house can vary both in amount and in form. The most common type of collection is a rake. Some houses may charge an entry fee to the facility or a fee based on the length of time played. Higher fees tend to be more accepted by players when they are taken as a rake, therefore making the other forms of payment prominent only in jurisdictions where taking a house cut is illegal.

EXAMPLE: "The house cut is 5% of each pot."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues
