Put On

  1. Verb

To infer what cards an opponent is holding; to treat an opponent's unknown hand as though it were a specific hand rank or among a specific group of hand ranks for the purpose of deciding the best playing strategy for the hand.

EXAMPLE: "I had Ah-9h. Both my opponent and I checked when the flop came up 5h-9s-10c, and raised when the turn was the Jack of clubs. I put my opponent on either a club flush draw or a straight draw, and decided to raise when the river card was the Ace of diamonds. My read was wrong. It turns out my opponent made a King-high straight on the turn."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues
