Prop

  1. Noun

A proposition player; a cardroom employee who is paid a predetermined amount to play in shorthanded games but whose bankroll is not supplied by the house; a house player who risks one's own money and is compensated based on amount of play; prop player.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The purpose of a prop is to ensure a sufficient number of players in a given game so that it is able to begin or continue. Rules about the use of props vary. They are typically not permitted to stay at a full table. Some locations require props to be readily identified, some permit silent props, and others disallow their use entirely. Props are typically paid an hourly rate, but in some instances the pay is based on the number of hands played or is a salary.

EXAMPLE: "When I was a prop the money from the house helped, but a big chunk of my income still came from my winnings. It was comforting to know that even if I just broke even with my own money I was still earning an income."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues

  2. Verb

To play with one's own money while earning money as an employee of the casino or cardroom; to serve as a proposition player.

EXAMPLE: "I used to prop at a nearby cardroom, but I decided I wanted more choice about where to play and what tables to play at."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues
