Freeroll
Noun
A tournament in which cash or prizes are offered but that has no entry fee; a promotional tournament with no entry fee.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Though they have no entry fee, freerolls may have special entrance restrictions, such as having earned a certain number of comp points, having signed up for a new site, or ladies only.
EXAMPLE: "I played reasonably well in the new players' $500 freeroll after I signed up for a new poker site, but I didn't end up placing in the money."
APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues
Verb
To draw for the possibility of winning the entire pot in a situation where one's hand is tied with that of an opponent who has no possibility of winning the entire pot.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Example: Player A has Ad-5d in the pocket. Player B has As-5c in the pocket. The flop is 2d-Jh-4d and the turn is 3s. Both Players A and B have a 5-high straight. If neither player's hand improves, they will split the pot. Player B's hand cannot improve on the river. Player A's hand can improve with any diamond making an Ace-high flush or the 3d making a 5-five straight flush. In this situation, Player A is freerolling.
EXAMPLE: "I was freerolling but didn't make the bigger hand. We ended up just splitting the pot."
