or Better - [Hand Value] or Better

  1. Adjective

    That requires a player to hold at least the specified minimum hand strength in order to win the pot.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Eight or Better is commonly used as a qualifier requirement in low games.

    EXAMPLE: "We were playing eight or better Omaha high-low. I was worried about losing the low pot, but the board didn't have a single card below eight. Since nobody qualified for the low portion, my high hand scooped the entire pot."

    USAGE: Describes a game.

  2. Adjective

    That requires a player to hold at least the specified minimum hand strength in order to make the first bet in the initial round of betting.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Jacks or Better is commonly used as an opening requirement.

    EXAMPLE: "We were playing 5-card draw, jacks or better. I know my opponent sometimes bets with absolutely nothing just to bluff, but because of the opener I knew I was up against at least a pair of jacks this time."
