    Markings in the upper left and lower right corners of a playing card that indicate the card's number value and suit.

    EXAMPLE: "Most professional card players will try to protect their cards by lifting them enough only to look at the index rather than looking at the entire card."

  2. Noun

    Any mark added to the back or edge of a card for the purpose of unfairly identifying it

    EXAMPLE: "I suspected one of my opponents was cheating, and this was confirmed when we discovered that many of the high cards had indexes on them."

    To mark the back or edge of a card for the purpose of identifying it in future hands.

    EXAMPLE: "I've never seen anyone indexing a card, but I really wouldn't even know what to look out for. I try to play only in reputable establishments that have enough security and surveillance so that I don't need to worry about it too much."
