Expected Value

  1. Noun

The average amount of money that a particular wager would win over a long period of time; for a specific wager, the pot equity minus the amount to be wagered.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A common error made when calculating expected value is neglecting to include the amount of money players in later positions are likely to wager when determining the total amount at stake.

EXAMPLE: "I estimated that I had a slightly negative expected value, but I decided to semi-bluff and I raised all-in."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues
