WSOP VP on the 20,000-pound gorilla, the unicorn and 22 Main Events

LAS VEGAS – An hour before cards go in the air on the second night of the World Series of Poker Main Event final table at Horseshoe Las Vegas, the new arena is doing something the old ballrooms at the Rio never could.

The rig hanging over the table is lit up, casting deep, electric-blue light across the floor. They started calling it the mothership back in May, the day the curtain came down on it, and the name stuck. The new set covers 25,000 square feet with LED walls on three sides, and screens big enough to follow the whole table from the back of the rail. The flashy make-shift poker haven keeps filling in, red shirts on one side, black on the other, everybody trying to grab a spot with a good view.

And standing in the middle of it, with two mobile phones in his hands, as always, is the guy who has been doing this since 2005.

SVP of Poker Operations and World Series of Poker at Caesars Entertainment Jack Effel does not give short answers, and he never has. Ask him one question and he'll take it four places you never asked about.

"I'm 50, going on 51," he says when I ask his age. Then I ask how many World Series he's been part of, and he counts it out on his fingers, 2005 through 2026, and lands on 22 Main Events.

The 57th World Series of Poker wrapped its schedule on 15 July after 51 days and 100 bracelet events, and the numbers were staggering. A record 251,899 entries across 100 bracelet events, with $469,975,059 in prize money and more than 35,000 players paid. The $1,000 Mystery Millions alone drew 22,811 entries, the largest $1,000 event ever held in live poker, and the Mini Main pulled 12,560. Forty-one players left here with a seven-figure score.

Effel has been asked to explain runs like this before, and he does not reach for anything fancy.

"The World Series of Poker is still the one no-miss tournament of the year," he said. "They may not come as long, they may not come for as many events, but they still come."

He is careful not to take a victory lap. Twenty-plus years in, he says, the staff is hyper-critical by habit and refuses to treat any summer as finished business. But he does allow himself one description of what this thing has become, and it is the best line he gave me all night.

"The WSOP is kind of a unicorn," he said. "You can't really compare it to how everything else is going. When everything else is slow, WSOP might seem slower, too, but it's still not slow, because it's pretty dang busy."

Then he offers the other half of the job, the part that does not go in a press release.

"We're always ready for the 20,000-pound gorilla. Sometimes he beats the heck out of us, and sometimes we draw, and we say, hey, we'll fight again next year and see who wins. But we take our blows."

The rounding error
Here is the one number that did not set a record.

The Main Event drew 9,208 entries, the fourth-largest field in history, with a $10 million first prize, but a drop off from the record 10,112 that ponied up the $10,000 entry fee in 2024. I asked Effel if he was surprised.

"It's a rounding error, in my opinion," he said. "You're a few hundred off. You're still over 9,000 entries. You still have $10 million for first place. You still have people from 100 different countries here."

For the record, it was 111 countries in the Main Event field, which is itself an all-time high.

He did not stop there. Effel believes the Main Event has reached a natural size and that a few hundred entries one way or the other simply aren't meaningful.

"It's very easy for a few hundred people to have other plans," he said. "Hey, I want to go watch the World Cup this year. I want to stay home, it's too hot. I want to take a vacation with my kids because it's summertime. Even though it's the one no-miss tournament of the year, people still have lives."

Choosing Disneyland over the World Series of Poker, he said, is always an option. Call it spin if you want. But he has been standing in these rooms for two decades watching the same crowd file in, and I have never once heard him oversell a number that did not deserve it.

Three weeks, and who made the call
Another change this year was the final table pause. The Main Event final table was decided on 13 July. They came back 22 days later, the longest wait since the last of the November Nine in 2016.

Effel wanted no part of the credit or the blame.

"I'll punt that more to Ty Stewart and World Series of Poker and the new deal with ESPN," he said, and then he explained the mechanics of it, which are less romantic than the poker world assumed. The date was ESPN's to pick. The August window was what the network's calendar had available for prime time on ESPN and ESPN2.

"It could've been the next week. It could've been three months," he said. "But this was the time that was best for ESPN and the WSOP agreement, and this is where we ended up."

As a poker fan, though, he likes it, and the reason he gave has nothing to do with ratings.

"These guys having the spotlight for the most important moment of their career," he said. "Whether you finish ninth or you win the thing, being at this final table, it is like nothing else that you could accomplish in poker."

He gave ESPN and Omaha Productions credit for telling the players' stories without abandoning the poker, and he gave Stewart credit for getting the deal done at all.

Then we got to the shot clock. Twenty seconds to act, six 30-second extensions, installed on Day 7 of the Main Event, for the first time in the history of the WSOP. It was then removed for the final table.

"I've always been about letting the players play in their natural habitat," he said. "This is like taking a bunch of wild animals and putting them in a zoo. They're going to act different."

What changed his mind was the pay jumps, and one bad apple spoiling the bunch. When the shot clock was introduced, players found the authority in Section 80 of the WSOP rulebook, which lets the house implement an event-wide shot clock at any point in any tournament.

"Several years ago I put it into the rules saying we reserve the right to put a shot clock in at any time," Effel said. "We reserve the right as the floor that's managing the tournament to call a clock on a player if we think that they're abusing time."

Effel then made the argument that flips the entire debate on its head. The loudest objection to a clock has always been that it punishes recreational players. He thinks the opposite is true.

He listed four ways unlimited time gets weaponized. Stalling for pay jumps. Aggravating an opponent. Fishing for a read. And the fourth he called the most significant.

"The more time the better player has, the more likely he is to make the best decision," he said. "If you give a player that hasn't seen as many hands as much time as possible, they're going to run out of scenarios in their head, and they're going to make a decision a lot quicker than somebody that's more experienced and knows how to run all the mathematics, run all the solvers, do whatever they do in their head."

That, he said, is the disadvantage.

"Just like any other sport, everybody has the same amount of time to take the shot in basketball, the same time to hit the ball in baseball," he said. "At some point you have to take your shot. Poker's a lot different. There is nothing blocking that. So when time is unlimited, it's not fair for everybody."

He stressed twice that the decision was made collectively, not by him alone, and that pulling the clock for the final table was a separate call made for a separate reason.

"We don't put too many constraints on the players, good ones or bad ones, to have enough time to make these multimillion dollar decisions at the final table."

Twenty-two and counting
The set was starting to fill in behind us. ESPN was taping its pre-show intro. The energy in the room was building. Somebody from production started to wave us off the set. It was 20 minutes until showtime.

One last question, I said. If your 2005 self was standing here looking at all of this and hearing all of the record-breaking numbers, what does he say?

"This is beyond anything that I could have ever imagined," Effel said. "Despite all the different things that have happened over the years, whether it was the UIGEA in 2006, Black Friday in 2011, COVID in 2020, any of those things that kind of said, hey, it’s going to kill poker."

He shook his head.

"You're not going to kill poker. Poker is here to stay.

“It never gets old for me. My sole mission, as long as I'm doing this and being part of this team, is to continue to contribute however I can to make that better for as many years as they'll let me keep doing it."
